English Translation

Rawḥ narrated to us, Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatādah who said: Anas ibn Mālik mentioned to us from Abū Ṭalḥah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ ordered on the day of Badr regarding twenty-four men from the chiefs of Quraysh, and they were thrown into a foul, filthy well among the wells of Badr. He used to stay in the territory of a conquered people for three nights. On the third day at Badr, he ordered his she-camel saddled, then walked, and his Companions followed him. They said: He must be going to relieve himself. He stood at the edge of the well and called them by their names and their fathers' names: 'O so-and-so son of so-and-so! O so-and-so son of so-and-so! Would it please you that you had obeyed Allāh and His Messenger? We have found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?' ʿUmar said: O Messenger of Allāh, are you speaking to bodies that have no souls? He said: 'By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muḥammad, you do not hear what I say any better than they do.' Qatādah said: Allāh brought them to life so they could hear his words as a rebuke, humiliation, and abasement. Ḥusayn narrated to us from Shaybān, but did not trace it back to Abū Ṭalḥah. He said: 'and abasement.'
