Hadith #533

English Translation

ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us, Ḥarb ibn Thābit — who used to live among Banū Sulaym — narrated to us, he said: Isḥāq ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather who said: A man recited Qurʾān in the presence of ʿUmar, and ʿUmar corrected him. The man said: I recited it to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and he did not correct me. So they gathered before the Prophet ﷺ and the man recited to the Prophet ﷺ. He said to him: 'You have done well.' ʿUmar seemed to feel something about that, so the Prophet ﷺ said: 'O ʿUmar, the Qurʾān is all correct as long as punishment is not turned into forgiveness, or forgiveness into punishment.' ʿAbd al-Ṣamad said on another occasion: Abū Thābit, from his written record.
