English Translation
Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, he said: I heard Yūnus narrating from al-Zuhrī, from Muslim ibn Yazīd, one of Banū Saʿd ibn Bakr, that he heard Abū Shurayḥ al-Khuzāʿī, then al-Kaʿbī — who was a Companion of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — saying: The Messenger of Allāh permitted us on the day of the conquest to fight Banū Bakr until we took our vengeance from them while he was in Makkah. Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ ordered the swords sheathed. The next day, a group of us met a man from Hudhayl in the Sacred Precinct heading toward the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ to accept Islam. He had wronged them in the pre-Islamic era and they had been seeking him. They killed him, rushing before he could reach the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and gain safety. When this reached the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, he was intensely angry. By Allāh, I never saw him angrier. We rushed to Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿAlī رضي الله عنهم seeking their intercession, fearing we were doomed. When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prayed, he stood and praised Allāh عز وجل as He deserves, then said: 'As for what follows: Indeed Allāh عز وجل is the One who made Makkah sacred, not the people. He only permitted it to me for one hour of yesterday's day, and today it is sacred as Allāh عز وجل made it sacred the first time. The most transgressive of people against Allāh عز وجل are three: a man who kills in it, a man who kills other than his killer, and a man who seeks a pre-Islamic vendetta. By Allāh, I will pay the blood money for this man you killed.' So the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ paid his blood money.
