English Translation
ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us, he said: Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ informed us, from Abū Qilābah, from ʿAmr ibn Salamah, who said: Riders used to come to us from the direction of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and we would ask them to recite for us. They would tell us that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Let the one among you who has the most Quran lead you in prayer.' They looked and found no one who had more Quran than me because of what I had learned from the riders. So they put me forward and I was a boy of six or seven years. I had a garment which, when I prostrated, would rise up from me. A woman from the people said: 'Will you not cover the backside of your reciter from us?' So they bought me a shirt, and I was never happier with anything than I was with that shirt.
