Hadith #102

English Translation

Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us, he said: ʿIkrimah narrated to us, he said: Iyās ibn Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ narrated to us, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه against Fazārah, and I went out with him. When we drew near to the water, Abū Bakr halted us for rest. When we prayed Fajr, he ordered us and we launched the raid. We reached the water, and Abū Bakr killed those he killed, with us alongside him. Salamah said: I saw a group of people, including women and children, and I feared they would reach the mountain before me. I caught up with them and shot an arrow between them and the mountain. When they saw the arrow, they stopped. There was a woman from Fazārah wearing a leather garment, and with her was a daughter who was one of the most beautiful of the Arabs. I drove them to Abū Bakr, and Abū Bakr gave me her daughter as spoils. I did not uncover a garment of hers until I reached Madīnah. She spent the night with me, and I did not uncover a garment of hers, until the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ met me in the marketplace and said: "O Salamah, give me the woman." I said: O Messenger of Allāh, she has impressed me, and I have not uncovered a garment of hers. He remained silent. The next day, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ met me in the marketplace — and I had not uncovered a garment of hers — and said: "O Salamah, give me the woman, may Allāh bless your father." I said: She is yours, O Messenger of Allāh. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent her to the people of Makkah and ransomed with her Muslim captives who were in the hands of the polytheists.
