Hadith #153

English Translation

ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, Dāwūd ibn Qays al-Ṣanʿānī informed us, he said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Wahb narrated to me, from his father, he said: Fannaj narrated to me, he said: I used to work in al-Daynabādh, tending it. Then Yaʿlā ibn Umayyah came as governor over Yemen, and men from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ came with him. A man from those who came with him approached me while I was in the field directing water into the crops. He had walnuts in his sleeve. He sat on an irrigation channel and was cracking those walnuts and eating. Then he beckoned to Fannaj and said: O Persian, come here! I drew near to him. The man said to Fannaj: Will you guarantee planting these walnuts by the water? Fannaj said to him: What benefit is that to me? The man said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say with these two ears of mine: Whoever plants a tree and patiently tends it and cares for it until it bears fruit, everything taken from its fruit is charity for him with Allāh عز وجل. Fannaj said: You heard this from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ? He said: Yes. Fannaj said: Then I guarantee it. And from those are the walnuts of al-Daynabādh.
