English Translation
Abū al-Naḍr narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥakam ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from Abū Tamīmah, from a man of his people: He came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — or he said: I was present with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — and a man came to him and said: Are you the Messenger of Allāh? Or he said: Are you Muḥammad? He said: Yes. He said: To what do you call? He said: I call to Allāh عز وجل alone — the One who, when harm befalls you and you call upon Him, removes it from you; the One who, when a year of drought strikes you and you call upon Him, causes vegetation to grow for you; and the One who, when you are in a barren land and lose your way and call upon Him, guides you back. The man accepted Islam and then said: Advise me, O Messenger of Allāh. He said to him: Never curse anything — or he said: anyone (al-Ḥakam was unsure). He said: I have not cursed a camel or a sheep since the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ advised me. And: Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it is merely showing a cheerful face to your brother while speaking to him. And pour from your bucket into the vessel of one who asks for water. And wear your lower garment to mid-shin; if you refuse, then to the ankles. And beware of trailing the lower garment, for it is from vanity, and Allāh تبارك وتعالى does not love vanity.
