Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā narrated to us, ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us — he said: My father informed us, from his father, from Dhū al-Jawshan al-Ḍibābī, he said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing a foal of a mare of mine called al-Qarḥāʾ. I said: O Muḥammad, I have brought you the foal of al-Qarḥāʾ for you to take. He said: I have no need of it, but if you wish, I will exchange it for the finest suits of armor from Badr. I said: I would not exchange it today for armor. He said: I have no need of it. Then he said: O Dhū al-Jawshan, will you not accept Islam and be among the first people of this matter? I said: No. He said: Why? I said: I have seen your people turn passionately against you. He said: How have you heard about their fates at Badr? I said: It has reached me. He said: We will guide you. I said: If you prevail over the Kaʿbah and settle there. He said: Perhaps if you live, you will see that. Then he said: O Bilāl, take the man's saddlebag and provision him with ʿajwah dates. When I turned away, he said: Indeed he is among the best horsemen of Banū ʿĀmir. He said: By Allāh, I was with my family in the lowlands when a rider approached. I said: What have the people done? He said: By Allāh, Muḥammad has prevailed over the Kaʿbah and settled there. I said: My mother would grieve for me! Had I accepted Islam that day and then asked him for al-Ḥīrah, he would have granted it to me. Shaybān ibn Abī Shaybah Abū Muḥammad narrated to us, he said: Jarīr — meaning Ibn Ḥāzim — narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī, he said: Dhū al-Jawshan came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered him a horse as a gift while he was still a polytheist. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ refused to accept it, then said: If you wish, sell it to me — or: would you sell it to me for the finest suits of armor from Badr? Then he ﷺ said to him: Would you like to be the first to enter this matter? He said: No. the Prophet ﷺ said: What prevents you? He said: I have seen your people deny you, expel you, and fight you. So I will watch what happens. If you prevail over them, I will believe in you and follow you; and if they prevail over you, I will not follow you. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: O Dhū al-Jawshan, perhaps if you live — and he mentioned the ḥadīth similarly. Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to me, he said: ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Dhū al-Jawshan, he said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he finished from Badr with a foal of a mare of mine called al-Qarḥāʾ. I said: O Muḥammad — and he mentioned the ḥadīth.
