English Translation
Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated to us, he said: Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from Abū Jabīrah ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Anṣārī, from uncles of his: the Prophet ﷺ arrived and there was not one of us except that he had a nickname or two. When he would call someone by his nickname, they would say: O Messenger of Allāh, he dislikes that. So the verse was revealed: "And do not call each other by offensive nicknames" (49:11).
