حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَخِي ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ الصَّعْبَ بْنَ جَثَّامَةَ بْنِ قَيْ
سٍ اللَّيْثِيَّ يَقُولُ أَهْدَيْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِمَارَ وَحْشٍ بِالْأَبْوَاءِ فَرَدَّهُ عَلَيَّ فَلَمَّا عَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَجْهِي كَرَاهِيَةَ رَدِّهِ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِنَا رَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ وَلَكِنَّا حُرُمٌ

English Translation
ʿAbdullāh narrated to us, he said: Isḥāq narrated to us, he said: Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm informed us, he said: The nephew of Ibn Shihāb narrated to us, from his uncle, he said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn ʿUtbah ibn Masʿūd informed me that ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās used to say: I heard al-Ṣaʿb ibn Jaththāmah ibn Qays al-Laythī say: I gave the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ a wild donkey at al-Abwāʾ. He returned it to me. When the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ recognized the displeasure of the rejection on my face, he said: It is not that we are rejecting your gift, but we are in a state of iḥrām.
