English Translation

Khālid ibn al-Walīd narrated — via ʿAzrah ibn Qays — : The Commander of the Believers [ʿUmar] wrote to me when Syria had settled — such and such — ordering me to march to India. And India in our minds at that time meant Basra. He said: And I was averse to that. A man stood and said to me: 'O Abū Sulaymān, fear Allāh, for the tribulations have appeared.' He said: 'While Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb is alive?! They will only come after him, when people are scattered here and there. A man will look and think whether he can find a place that has not been afflicted with the same tribulation and evil as his own place, and he will not find it.' He said: 'Those are the days that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ mentioned before the Hour — the days of al-harj [killing and chaos]. We seek refuge with Allāh that those days should reach us and you.'
