حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ كَانَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ عِنْدَهُ فِي وَفْدٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللّ
َهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ مَلِكٌ مِنْ قَحْطَانَ فَغَضِبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ فَقَامَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ رِجَالًا مِنْكُمْ يُحَدِّثُونَ أَحَادِيثَ لَيْسَتْ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تُؤْثَرُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُولَئِكَ جُهَّالُكُمْ فَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْأَمَانِيَّ الَّتِي تُضِلُّ أَهْلَهَا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ لَا يُنَازِعُهُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَكَبَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim narrated that it reached Muʿāwiyah — while he [Muḥammad] was with him in a Quraysh delegation — that ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ was narrating that there would be a king from Qaḥṭān. Muʿāwiyah became angry, stood up, praised Allāh عز وجل as He deserves, then said: 'As for what follows: It has reached me that men among you narrate things that are neither in the Book of Allāh nor traced back to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. Those are your ignorant ones. Beware of false hopes that mislead their people, for I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: This matter [of authority] belongs to Quraysh. No one contests them in it except that Allāh throws him on his face, as long as they establish the religion.'
