حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ وَسَعْدٌ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ هُرْمُزَ الْأَعْرَجُ أَنَّ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنْكَحَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ ابْنَتَهُ وَأَنْك
َحَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ابْنَتَهُ وَقَدْ كَانَا جَعَلَا صَدَاقًا فَكَتَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَهُوَ خَلِيفَةٌ إِلَى مَرْوَانَ يَأْمُرُهُ بِالتَّفْرِيقِ بَيْنَهُمَا وَقَالَ فِي كِتَابِهِ هَذَا الشِّغَارُ الَّذِي نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

English Translation
Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās married his daughter to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥakam, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān married his daughter to him, with each marriage serving as the dowry for the other. Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, who was the caliph, wrote to Marwān ordering that they be separated, and he said in his letter: 'This is al-shighār [exchange marriage without proper dowry] which the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prohibited.'
