حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَقَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبَّادٍ قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ حَاجًّا قَدِمْنَا مَعَهُ مَكَّةَ قَالَ فَصَلَّى بِنَا الظُّهْرَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ إِلَى دَارِ النَّدْوَةِ قَالَ وَكَانَ عُثْمَانُ حِينَ أَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ إِذَا قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ صَلَّى بِهَا الظُّهْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ وَالْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ أَرْبَعًا أَرْبَعًا فَإِذَا خَرَجَ إِلَى مِنًى وَعَرَفَاتٍ قَصَرَ الصَّلَاةَ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ الْحَجِّ وَأَقَامَ بِمِنًى أَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ مِنْ مَكَّةَ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى بِنَا الظُّهْرَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ نَهَضَ إِلَيْهِ مَرْوَانُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ وَعَمْرُو
بْنُ عُثْمَانَ فَقَالَا لَهُ مَا عَابَ أَحَدٌ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ بِأَقْبَحِ مَا عِبْتَهُ بِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُمَا وَمَا ذَاكَ قَالَ فَقَالَا لَهُ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ أَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ بِمَكَّةَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُمَا وَيْحَكُمَا وَهَلْ كَانَ غَيْرُ مَا صَنَعْتُ قَدْ صَلَّيْتُهُمَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا قَالَا فَإِنَّ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ قَدْ كَانَ أَتَمَّهَا وَإِنَّ خِلَافَكَ إِيَّاهُ لَهُ عَيْبٌ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ إِلَى الْعَصْرِ فَصَلَّاهَا بِنَا أَرْبَعًا

English Translation
ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Zubayr narrated: When Muʿāwiyah came to us as a pilgrim, we came with him to Makkah. He prayed Ẓuhr with us as two rakʿahs, then he went to Dār al-Nadwah. — ʿUthmān, when he completed the prayer [praying four instead of shortening] upon arriving in Makkah, would pray Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, and ʿIshāʾ as four rakʿahs each. When he went out to Minā and ʿArafāt, he shortened. When he finished Ḥajj and stayed at Minā, he completed until he departed from Makkah. — When Muʿāwiyah prayed Ẓuhr with us as two rakʿahs, Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam and ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān went to him and said: 'No one has criticized your cousin [ʿUthmān] with anything uglier than what you have done.' He said: 'What is that?' They said: 'Did you not know that he completed the prayer in Makkah?' He said to them: 'Woe to you! Was there anything other than what I did? I prayed them with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنهما.' They said: 'But your cousin completed them, and your contradicting him is a fault.' So Muʿāwiyah went out for ʿAṣr and prayed it with us as four rakʿahs.
