حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَفِي يَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ شَعَرٍ قَالَ سَمِع
ْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ

English Translation
Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated that he saw Muʿāwiyah addressing on the minbar with a quṣṣah [lock] of hair in his hand. He said: 'I heard him say: Where are your scholars, O people of Madīnah? I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prohibiting the like of this and saying: The Children of Isrāʾīl were only punished when their women adopted this.'
