حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَن
َا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُفْرَضْ عَلَيْنَا صِيَامُهُ فَمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ فَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَصَامَ النَّاسُ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ

عبد الرزاق حدثن
English Translation
Muʿāwiyah narrated — via Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf — that he heard Muʿāwiyah giving a sermon in Madīnah saying: 'O people of Madīnah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: This is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ. Its fasting has not been made obligatory upon us. Whoever among you wishes to fast, let him fast, for I am fasting.' So the people fasted.
