English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, he said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū al-Fayḍ, from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir who said: Muʿāwiyah was traveling through Roman territory, and there was a treaty period between them. He wanted to draw near to them so that when the treaty expired he could attack them. Then an elderly man on a mount appeared, saying: "Allāhu Akbar! Allāhu Akbar! Fulfillment, not treachery!" The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Whoever has a treaty between himself and a people, let him not undo a knot nor tie one until the treaty expires, or let him declare the treaty null to them on equal terms." When that reached Muʿāwiyah, he withdrew. And the elder was ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah.
