Hadith #564

English Translation

Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, he said: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿAmr al-Saybānī, from Abū Sallām al-Dimashqī and ʿAmr ibn ʿAbdillāh: that they heard Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī narrating from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah al-Sulamī who said: I was repelled by the idols of my people in the pre-Islamic period. He mentioned the ḥadīth: I inquired about him and found him hiding. I approached him discreetly until I entered upon him and greeted him. I said: "What are you?" He said: "A Prophet." I said: "And what is a Prophet?" He said: "A Messenger of Allāh." I said: "And who sent you?" He said: "Allāh عز وجل." I said: "With what did He send you?" He said: "With the command to maintain kinship ties, protect lives, secure the roads, break the idols, and worship Allāh alone without associating anything with Him." I said: "Excellent is what He sent you with. I bear witness that I believe in you and affirm your truth. Shall I stay with you, or what do you advise?" He said: "You see how people detest what I have brought. Stay with your family, and when you hear that I have departed (to Madinah), come to me." He mentioned the rest of the ḥadīth.
