English Translation

Sufyān narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Yazīd, the freedman of al-Munbaʿith. Yaḥyā said: Rabīʿah informed me that he reported from Zayd ibn Khālid. I asked Rabīʿah, and he said: He informed me from Zayd ibn Khālid. the Prophet ﷺ was asked about stray camels, and he became angry — his cheeks reddened — and said: "What concern is it of yours? It has its hooves and its water vessel. It goes to water and eats from trees until its owner finds it." He was asked about stray sheep and said: "Take it, for it is either for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf." He was asked about a found item (luqaṭah), and he said: "Know its container and its tie, then announce it for a year. If it is claimed, give it; otherwise, mix it with your wealth."
