English Translation

Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd, he said: Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ narrated to us, who said: We went out with the Prophet ﷺ to Khaybar. A man from the group said: O ʿĀmir, let us hear some of your little songs. So he dismounted and began chanting the ḥidāʾ for them, reciting: "By Allāh, were it not for Allāh we would not have been guided..." — and he mentioned other poetry I did not memorize. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Who is this driver?" They said: ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ. He said: "May Allāh have mercy on him." A man from the group said: O Prophet of Allāh, if only you had let us benefit from him longer. When the two sides lined up and they fought, ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ was struck by the pommel of his own sword and died. When evening came, they lit many fires. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "What are these fires? What are they being lit for?" They said: For domestic donkeys. He said: "Pour out what is in them and break the pots." A man said: Shall we pour out what is in them and wash them? He said: "Or that."
