Hadith #106

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْصُورٌ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ مَعْدِي كَرِبَ أَبِي كَرِيمَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لَيْلَةُ الضَّيْفِ وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ فَإِنْ أَصْبَحَ بِفِنَائِهِ مَحْرُومًا كَانَ دَيْنًا لَهُ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ شَاءَ اقْتَضَاهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَهُ
English Translation
Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us saying: Shuʿbah narrated to us, Manṣūr narrated to me, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdī Karib Abū Karīmah رضي الله عنه, that he heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: "Hosting a guest for one night is obligatory upon every Muslim. If he finds himself in [the host's] courtyard in the morning deprived [of hospitality], it becomes a debt upon [the host]. If he wishes, he may collect it; and if he wishes, he may leave it."
