Hadith #177

ʿAbdullāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us — ʿAbdullāh said: and I heard it from ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Shaybah in Kūfah — he said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl, he said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAmr ibn Umayyah informed me, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him alone as a spy to Quraysh. He said: I came to the wooden cross of Khubayb while I feared the watchmen. I climbed it and untied Khubayb, and he fell to the ground. I moved away a short distance, then looked back and did not see Khubayb — it was as if the earth had swallowed him. No trace of Khubayb was seen until this hour. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: Ibn Abī Shaybah mentioned al-Zuhrī in his chain to us, but my father narrated it to us without mentioning al-Zuhrī. Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated it to us in Kūfah and included al-Zuhrī in the chain for us.
