English Translation
Wakīʿ narrated to us, Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Qays, from Dukayn ibn Saʿīd al-Khathʿamī, who said: "We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — we were four hundred and forty — asking him for food. the Prophet ﷺ said to ʿUmar: 'Go and give them.' ʿUmar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have nothing except what will last me and the children for the summer.'" Wakīʿ said: "Al-qayẓ in the language of the Arabs is four months." He said: "'Go and give them.' ʿUmar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I hear and obey.'" He said: "ʿUmar stood and we stood with him. He took us up to an upper room of his and took the key from his waistband and opened the door." Dukayn said: "In the upper room was an amount of dates like a crouching young camel. He said: 'Help yourselves.' Each man among us took what he needed, as much as he wished. Then I looked back — and I was among the last of them — and it was as if we had not taken a single date from it."
