English Translation

ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr Abū ʿĀmir narrated to us saying: Hishām ibn Saʿd narrated to us saying: Qays ibn Bishr al-Taghlibī narrated to us saying: My father told me — and he used to sit with Abū al-Dardāʾ — he said: There was in Damascus a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ called Ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah, and he was a solitary man who rarely sat with people. He was always in prayer, and when he finished, he would glorify and magnify Allah until he went to his family. One day he passed by us while we were with Abū al-Dardāʾ. Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him, 'A word that benefits us and does not harm you.' He said, 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military detachment, and they returned. A man from among them came and sat in the gathering where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was, and said to a man next to him, "If you had seen us when we met the enemy! So-and-so charged and thrust his spear and said, 'Take that, and I am the Ghifārī lad!' What do you think of his statement?" He said, "I think he has nullified his reward." Another man heard this and said, "I see nothing wrong with that." They debated until the Prophet ﷺ heard them and said, "Glory be to Allah! There is nothing wrong with a person being praised and rewarded."' He said: I saw Abū al-Dardāʾ delighted by this, raising his head toward him and saying, 'Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He would say, 'Yes.' He kept repeating this until I thought he would kneel before him.
