English Translation
Wakīʿ narrated to us, Hishām ibn Saʿd narrated to us, Qays ibn Bishr al-Taghlibī narrated to me, from his father — who used to sit with Abū al-Dardāʾ in Damascus — who said: There was in Damascus a man called Ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah, a solitary man who hardly spoke to anyone. He was always in prayer, and when he finished, he would glorify, magnify, and declare the oneness of Allah until he returned to his family. One day he passed by us while we were with Abū al-Dardāʾ. Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him, 'A word from you that benefits us and does not harm you.' He said, 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on a military detachment. When we returned, a man from among them sat in a gathering where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was and said, "O so-and-so, if you had seen so-and-so thrust his spear and then say, 'Take that, and I am the Ghifārī lad!' — what do you think?" He said, "I think his reward has been nullified." They discussed this until the Prophet ﷺ heard their voices and said, "Rather, he is praised and rewarded."' Abū al-Dardāʾ was so delighted by this that he nearly knelt before him, saying, 'Did you hear that?' — repeating it several times, and he said, 'Yes.'
