ʿAlī ibn ʿAbdullāh narrated to us, al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to me, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir narrated to me saying: Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd narrated to me, Abū Kabshah al-Salūlī narrated to me that he heard Sahl Ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah al-Anṣārī, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, [say] that ʿUyaynah and al-Aqraʿ asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for something, and he ordered Muʿāwiyah to write it for them. He did so, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sealed it and ordered it given to them. As for ʿUyaynah, he said, 'What is in it?' He was told, 'In it is what you were commanded.' So he accepted it and tied it in his turban — and he was the wiser of the two men. As for al-Aqraʿ, he said, 'Shall I carry a letter not knowing what is in it, like the letter of al-Mutalammis?' So Muʿāwiyah informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of their statements. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out for some need and passed by a camel kneeling at the door of the mosque from the beginning of the day. He passed by it again at the end of the day and it was still in the same state. He said, 'Where is the owner of this camel?' He was sought but not found. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Fear Allah regarding these animals. Ride them when they are healthy and ride them when they are well-fed.' Then, as if displeased, he said, 'Whoever asks while he has what suffices him is only accumulating from the Fire of Hell.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what suffices him?' He said, 'What provides him lunch or dinner.'
