English Translation
Al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Makhlad narrated to us, from Thawr, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAmr al-Sulamī, from al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah رضي الله عنه, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ led us in Fajr prayer, then turned to us and admonished us with an eloquent admonition from which eyes shed tears and hearts trembled. We said — or they said: "O Messenger of Allāh, this seems like the admonition of one bidding farewell, so advise us." He said: "I advise you to have taqwā of Allāh, and to hear and obey, even if it be an Abyssinian slave [who commands you]. For whoever among you lives will see much disagreement after me. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs. Bite upon it with your molars. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."
