English Translation

Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, Thawr ibn Yazīd narrated to us, Khālid ibn Maʿdān narrated to us saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAmr al-Sulamī and Ḥujr ibn Ḥujr narrated to us, they said: We came to al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah — and he was among those about whom was revealed: {Nor upon those who, when they came to you that you might give them mounts, you said: 'I find nothing to carry you upon'} — We greeted him and said: "We have come to visit you, to check on your health, and to seek knowledge." Al-ʿIrbāḍ said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prayed Ṣubḥ with us one day, then turned to us and admonished us with an eloquent admonition from which eyes shed tears and hearts trembled. Someone said: "O Messenger of Allāh, this seems like the admonition of one bidding farewell, so what do you enjoin upon us?" He said: "I advise you to have taqwā of Allāh, and to hear and obey, even if it be an Abyssinian slave. For whoever among you lives after me will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs. Cling to it and bite upon it with your molars. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance." Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ narrated to us, Baqiyyah narrated to us, Baḥīr ibn Saʿd narrated to me, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Ibn Abī Bilāl, from al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah, that he narrated to them that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ admonished them one day after the Fajr prayer — and he mentioned it. Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥārith, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Abū Bilāl, from al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah, that he narrated to them that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ admonished them one day after the Fajr prayer — and he mentioned it.
