Hadith #285
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ
عَنْ قَيْسٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْمُسْتَوْرِدَ أَخَا بَنِي فِهْرٍ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاللَّهِ مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا مِثْلُ مَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِصْبَعَهُ هَذِهِ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ تَرْجِعُ يَعْنِي الَّتِي تَلِي الْإِبْهَامَ

English Translation
Ibn Numayr narrated to us, Ismāʿīl narrated to us — and Yazīd ibn Hārūn said: Ismāʿīl informed us — from Qays, who said: I heard al-Mustawrid, brother of Banū Fihr, saying: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'By Allāh, the worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing but like one of you dipping his finger — meaning the one next to the thumb — into the sea, so let him see what it brings back.'
