Hadith #288
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ قَالَ حَدَّ
ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنْ قَيْسٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْمُسْتَوْرِدَ أَخَا بَنِي فِهْرٍ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ وَاللَّهِ مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا مِثْلُ مَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِصْبَعَهُ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ تَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِ

English Translation
Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us, he said: Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Qays, who said: I heard al-Mustawrid, brother of Banū Fihr, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: 'By Allāh, the worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing but like one of you dipping his finger into the sea, so let him see what it brings back to him.'
