Hadith #298

English Translation

Wakīʿ narrated to us, al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'The parable of this ummah is like four people: a man whom Allāh gave wealth and knowledge, so he acts upon it with his wealth, spending it in its rightful ways; and a man whom Allāh gave knowledge but not wealth, who says: "If I had the like of what this man has, I would act with it the way he acts."' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'They are equal in reward. And a man whom Allāh gave wealth but not knowledge, so he spends it recklessly in other than its rightful ways; and a man whom Allāh gave neither wealth nor knowledge, who says: "If I had wealth like this man, I would act with it the way he acts."' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'They are equal in sin.' Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Sulaymān — and I heard him narrating from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī, from Ghaṭafān — from the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'The parable of my ummah is like four people' — and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said: 'A man whom Allāh gave wealth but not knowledge, so he spends it recklessly, not maintaining ties of kinship through it and not giving the due rights from it.' ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Walīd al-ʿAdanī narrated to us, Sufyān narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from Abū Kabshah, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ struck the parable of this ummah with four people — and he mentioned the hadith. Rawḥ narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Sulaymān, who said: I heard Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, who said: I heard Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'The parable of my ummah is like four' — and he mentioned the hadith.
