English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aṣbahānī who said: I heard ʿAbdullāh ibn Maʿqil say: I sat with Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah رضي الله عنه in this mosque — meaning the mosque of Kūfah — and asked him about the fidyah. He said: It was revealed concerning me specifically. I had much hair, and lice were falling on my face. the Prophet ﷺ passed by me and said: 'Are the lice in your head troubling you?' I said: 'Indeed.' He said: 'Then shave it and slaughter a sheep, or fast three days, or give in charity three ṣāʿs of dates among six poor persons.'
