Hadith #392

حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ الْبَجَلِيُّ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا أَنَا جَالِسٌ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُسْنِدِي ظُهُورِنَا إِلَى قِبْلَةِ مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبْعَةُ رَهْطٍ أَرْبَعَةٌ مَوَالِينَا وَثَلَاثَةٌ مِنْ عَرَبِنَا إِذْ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّه
ُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ مَا يُجْلِسُكُمْ هَاهُنَا قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ فَأَرَمَّ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ مَا يَقُولُ رَبُّكُمْ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قُلْنَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ فَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ مَنْ صَلَّى الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا وَحَافَظَ عَلَيْهَا وَلَمْ يُضَيِّعْهَا اسْتِخْفَافًا بِحَقِّهَا فَلَهُ عَلَيَّ عَهْدٌ أَنْ أُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُصَلِّ لِوَقْتِهَا وَلَمْ يُحَافِظْ عَلَيْهَا وَضَيَّعَهَا اسْتِخْفَافًا بِحَقِّهَا فَلَا عَهْدَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتُ عَذَّبْتُهُ وَإِنْ شِئْتُ غَفَرْتُ لَهُ

English Translation
Yazīd narrated to us, Hishām narrated to us, from Muḥammad, from Khulayd al-ʿAṣrī, from Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah رضي الله عنه who said: We were seven persons — four of our freed slaves and three of our Arabs — when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us at the time of Ẓuhr prayer until he reached us and said: 'What keeps you sitting here?' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are waiting for the prayer.' He said: Then he was silent for a while, then raised his head and said: 'Do you know what your Lord عز وجل says?' We said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'Your Lord عز وجل says: Whoever prays the prayer at its time, guards it, and does not neglect it out of belittling its right, then he has a covenant from Me that I shall admit him to Paradise. And whoever does not pray at its time, does not guard it, and neglects it out of belittling its right, then there is no covenant for him — if I wish, I shall punish him, and if I wish, I shall forgive him.'
