Hadith #423

English Translation

Yazīd narrated to us, Hishām informed us, from Muḥammad who said: I entered the central mosque and there was ʿAmr ibn Wahb al-Thaqafī, who had entered from the other side. We met near the middle of the mosque, and he began telling me the ḥadīth — and he liked what good it brought me. He began the ḥadīth and said: We were with al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, and this increased my confidence in it, what brought the ḥadīth close. He said: We asked: 'Did any man from this ummah lead the Prophet ﷺ in prayer other than Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله تعالى عنه?' He said: 'Yes. We were on such-and-such a journey. When it was the last part of the night, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck the neck of his riding camel and went off. I followed him and he disappeared for a while, then came and said: "Do you need anything?" I said: "I have no need, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do you have water?" I said: "Yes." So I poured it for him and he washed his hands, then his face. Then he went to push back his forearms, but he was wearing a Syrian cloak that was too tight, so he put his hands in and pulled them out from underneath the cloak. He washed his face and forearms, wiped his forelock and over the turban and over the leather socks. Then we caught up with the people and the prayer had been established, with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf leading them, having prayed one rakʿah. I went to inform him but he stopped me. So we prayed what we caught and made up what we missed.' — Aswad ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us, Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn who said: a man narrated to me from ʿAmr ibn Wahb — meaning — and he mentioned something similar.
