English Translation

ʿAbdullāh ibn Numayr narrated to us, Mujālid narrated to us, from ʿĀmir, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim رضي الله عنه who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he taught me Islam, described the prayer to me and how to pray each prayer at its time, then said to me: 'How would you be, O son of Ḥātim, when you ride from the castles of Yemen fearing none but Allah until you reach the castles of al-Ḥīrah?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what about the raiding parties and warriors of Ṭayyiʾ?' He said: 'Allah will suffice you against Ṭayyiʾ and everyone else.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we are people who hunt with these dogs and falcons — what is lawful for us from them?' He said: 'What is lawful for you is: {what you have taught the hunting animals, training them as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah over it.} Whatever you have trained of dog or falcon, then sent it and mentioned Allah's name over it — eat of what it catches for you.' I said, 'Even if it kills?' He said: 'Even if it kills and it has not eaten any of it, for it only caught it for you.' I said, 'What if other dogs mix with our dogs when we send them?' He said: 'Don't eat until you know that it was your dog that caught it for you.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we are people who throw the miʿrāḍ — what is lawful for us?' He said: 'Don't eat what you strike with the miʿrāḍ unless you slaughter it.'
