English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Balj, who said: I said to Muḥammad ibn Ḥāṭib رضي الله عنه, 'I have married two women and neither time was a duff beaten for me.' He said: 'What a bad thing you have done! the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The distinction between the lawful and the unlawful is the voice' — meaning the beating of the duff.
