حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ وَحَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الْأَعْمَشُ الْمَعْنَى عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ابْنِ حَسَنَةَ قَالَ وَكِيعٌ الْجُهَنِيُّ قَالَ غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَصَابَتْنَا مَجَاعَةٌ فَنَزَلْنَا بِأَرْضٍ كَثِيرَة
ِ الضِّبَابِ فَاتَّخَذْنَا مِنْهَا فَطَبَخْنَا فِي قُدُورِنَا فَسَأَلْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أُمَّةٌ فُقِدَتْ أَوْ مُسِخَتْ شَكَّ يَحْيَى وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ فَأَمَرَنَا فَأَكْفَأْنَا الْقُدُورَ قَالَ وَكِيعٌ مُسِخَتْ فَأَخْشَى أَنْ تَكُونَ هَذِهِ فَأَكْفَأْنَاهَا وَإِنَّا لَجِيَاعٌ

English Translation
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥasanah al-Juhanī said: We went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and were struck by severe hunger. We camped in an area with many lizards, so we caught them and cooked them in our pots. We asked the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: 'A nation was lost' — or 'was transformed' (Yaḥyā was uncertain) — 'and Allah knows best.' So he ordered us and we poured out the pots. Wakīʿ's wording: 'was transformed, and I fear these might be them.' So we poured them out, even though we were starving.
