English Translation
Quraysh ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abjar narrated to us, from his father, from Wāṣil ibn Ḥayyān, who said: Abū Wāʾil said: ʿAmmār رضي الله عنه gave us a sermon — eloquent yet concise. When he came down, we said: 'O Abū al-Yaqẓān, you were eloquent yet concise. If only you had spoken longer.' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The length of a man's prayer and the brevity of his sermon are a sign of his understanding. So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon, for some eloquence is indeed sorcery.'
