ʿAffān narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid narrated to us, Sulaymān al-Aʿmash narrated to us, Shaqīq narrated to us, who said: I was sitting with ʿAbdullāh and Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī. Abū Mūsā said to ʿAbdullāh: 'If a man cannot find water, he doesn't pray?' ʿAbdullāh said: 'No.' Abū Mūsā said: 'Don't you remember when ʿAmmār said to ʿUmar: Don't you remember when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you among camels and I became junub? I rolled in the dust. When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said: It would have sufficed you to do this — and he struck his palms on the ground, then wiped both palms together, and wiped his face with one wipe from one strike.' ʿAbdullāh said: 'Indeed, I did not see ʿUmar satisfied with that.' Abū Mūsā said: 'Then what about this verse in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ: {If you do not find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth}?' ʿAbdullāh did not know what to say, and said: 'If we gave them this concession in tayammum, one of them would do tayammum whenever cold water touched his skin.' ʿAffān said: Yaḥyā — meaning Ibn Saʿīd — disapproved of it. I asked Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth and he said: Al-Aʿmash used to narrate it to us from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, and he mentioned Abū Wāʾil.
