Hadith #573

English Translation

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Dharr, from Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā, from his father — that a man came to ʿUmar and said: 'I became junub and could not find water.' ʿUmar said: 'Don't pray.' ʿAmmār رضي الله عنه said: 'Don't you remember, O Commander of the Believers, when you and I were on an expedition and we both became junub and could not find water? As for you, you did not pray. As for me, I rolled in the dust and prayed. When we came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, he said: It would have sufficed you — and the Prophet ﷺ struck his hand on the ground, then blew on it and wiped his face and palms with it.' Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Dharr, from Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā, from his father — that a man came to ʿUmar. Ibn Jaʿfar mentioned the like of al-Ḥakam's hadith, adding: Salamah was uncertain — he said: I don't know whether it said 'to the elbows' or 'to the palms.' ʿUmar said: 'We'll let you bear responsibility for what you have taken upon yourself.'
