ʿAffān narrated to us, Hammām narrated to us, Qatādah narrated to us, al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ziyād al-ʿAdawī narrated to us — and Yazīd, the brother of Muṭarrif, narrated to me — and ʿUqbah narrated to me — all of them saying: Muṭarrif narrated to me that ʿIyāḍ ibn Ḥimār رضي الله عنه narrated to him that he heard the Prophet ﷺ saying in his sermon: 'Allah عز وجل commanded me to teach you what you did not know.' And he mentioned the hadith. He said: 'The weak one who has no willpower — those who are followers among you, seeking neither family nor wealth.' A man said to Muṭarrif: 'O Abū ʿAbdullāh, is he from the freed slaves or from the Arabs?' He said: 'He is the follower — a man who takes from his servants unlawfully, outside of marriage.' He said: 'The people of Paradise are three: a just ruler who is charitable and certain in faith; a merciful man, tender-hearted toward every relative and Muslim; and a chaste, poor man who gives charity.' Hammām said: Some of Qatādah's companions — and I believe he said Yūnus al-Iskāf — said to me that Qatādah did not hear the hadith of ʿIyāḍ ibn Ḥimār from Muṭarrif. I said: He narrated it to us from Muṭarrif, and you say he didn't hear it from Muṭarrif? He said: A Bedouin came and began questioning him boldly. We said to the Bedouin: Ask him whether he heard the hadith of ʿIyāḍ ibn Ḥimār from Muṭarrif. He asked him and he said: No, four people narrated it to me from Muṭarrif — and he named three, which are those I mentioned to you.
