حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ قَيْس
ٍ فَقَالَ أَفَرَرْتُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ فَقَالَ الْبَرَاءُ وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَفِرَّ كَانَتْ هَوَازِنُ نَاسًا رُمَاةً وَإِنَّا لَمَّا حَمَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ انْكَشَفُوا فَأَكْبَبْنَا عَلَى الْغَنَائِمِ فَاسْتَقْبَلُونَا بِالسِّهَامِ وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى بَغْلَتِهِ الْبَيْضَاءِ وَإِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ آخِذٌ بِلِجَامِهَا وَهُوَ يَقُولُ أَنَا النَّبِيُّ لَا كَذِبْ أَنَا ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبْ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq who said: I heard al-Barāʾ, and a man from Qays asked him: 'Did you flee from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Ḥunayn?' Al-Barāʾ said: 'But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not flee. Hawāzin were a people of archers. When we charged them, they dispersed, and we fell upon the spoils. Then they met us with arrows. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his white mule, with Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith holding its reins, and he was saying: I am the Prophet ﷺ, no lie — I am the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.'
