English Translation
ʿAffān narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn Zayd informed us, from ʿAdī ibn Thābit, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib رضي الله عنه who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we stopped at Ghadīr Khumm. The call for congregational prayer was made, and an area was cleared for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ under two trees. He prayed Ẓuhr and took the hand of ʿAlī رضي الله تعالى عنه and said: 'Do you not know that I am closer to the believers than their own selves?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you not know that I am closer to every believer than his own self?' They said: 'Yes.' He took the hand of ʿAlī and said: 'Whoever I am his master, then ʿAlī is his master. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him.' ʿUmar met him after that and said: 'Congratulations, O son of Abū Ṭālib — you have become the master of every believing man and woman.' Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: Hudbah ibn Khālid narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from ʿAdī ibn Thābit, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, from the Prophet ﷺ — similarly.
