ʿAffān narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us — Zubayd said: Manṣūr, Dāwūd, Ibn ʿAwn, and Mujālid informed me, from al-Shaʿbī — and this is the hadith of Zubayd who said: I heard al-Shaʿbī narrating from al-Barāʾ — and he narrated to us by a pillar in the mosque. He said: 'If I had been there, I would have told you its exact place.' He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us and said: 'The first thing we begin with on this day of ours is to pray, then we return and sacrifice. Whoever does that has followed our sunnah. Whoever slaughtered before that, it is merely meat he has prepared for his family — it has nothing to do with the ritual sacrifice.' My uncle Abū Burdah ibn Niyār had slaughtered and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered, and I have a young goat that is better than an older one.' He said: 'Sacrifice it in its place, but it will not suffice — or suffice — for anyone after you.'
