English Translation
ʿAffān narrated to us: ʿUmar ibn Abī Zāʾidah narrated to us who said: I heard Abū Isḥāq say: A man said to al-Barāʾ — jesting with him: 'You fled from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you are his Companions.' Al-Barāʾ said: 'I testify that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not flee that day. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day the trench was dug, carrying earth with the people, reciting the words of Ibn Rawāḥah: O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided — nor given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us — and make firm our feet if we meet the enemy. For indeed they have transgressed against us — and if they desire tribulation, we refuse. He was raising his voice with it.'
