Ḥasan ibn Mūsā narrated to us: Zuhayr narrated to us: Abū Isḥāq narrated to us, that al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed ʿAbdullāh ibn Jubayr in command of the archers on the day of Uḥud — they were fifty men — and stationed them at a position, saying: "Even if you see birds snatching us away, do not leave your position until I send word to you. And if you see us triumph over the enemy and trample them, do not leave until I send word to you." They routed the enemy. By Allah, I saw the women running up the mountain, their shins and anklets exposed, lifting their garments. The companions of ʿAbdullāh ibn Jubayr said: "The spoils, people! The spoils! Your companions have prevailed — what are you waiting for?" ʿAbdullāh ibn Jubayr said: "Have you forgotten what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you?" They said: "By Allah, we will go to the people and get some of the spoils!" When they went to them, their faces were turned back and they came fleeing in defeat. That is when the Messenger was calling them from behind. Only twelve men remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They killed seventy of us. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions had killed one hundred and forty of the polytheists at Badr — seventy captives and seventy slain. Abū Sufyān called out: "Is Muḥammad among the people? Is Muḥammad among the people? Is Muḥammad among the people?" — three times. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from answering. Then he said: "Is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah among the people? Is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah among the people? Is Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb among the people? Is Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb among the people?" Then he turned to his companions and said: "These have been killed — you are rid of them." ʿUmar could not restrain himself and said: "You have lied, by Allah, O enemy of Allah! Those you listed are all alive, and what remains for you will displease you!" He said: "A day for a day of Badr. War goes back and forth. You will find mutilation among the slain — I did not order it, but it does not displease me." Then he began chanting: "Rise, O Hubal! Rise, O Hubal!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Will you not answer him?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what shall we say?" He said: "Say: Allah is Most High and Most Majestic." He said: "We have al-ʿUzzā and you have no ʿUzzā!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Will you not answer him?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what shall we say?" He said: "Say: Allah is our Protector and you have no protector."
