Chain of Narration (Isnad)

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو رَجَاءٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلَى الْبَرَاءِ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَكَانَ النَّاسُ يَقُولُونَ لَهُ لِمَ تَخَتَّمُ بِالذَّهَبِ وَقَدْ نَهَى عَنْهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ الْبَرَاءُ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ غَنِيمَةٌ يَقْسِمُهَا سَبْيٌ وَخُرْثِيٌّ قَالَ فَقَسَمَهَا حَتَّى بَقِيَ هَذَا الْخَاتَمُ فَرَفَعَ طَرْفَهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى أَصْ

حَابِهِ ثُمَّ خَفَّضَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ طَرْفَهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ خَفَّضَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ طَرْفَهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيْ بَرَاءُ فَجِئْتُهُ حَتَّى قَعَدْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَأَخَذَ الْخَاتَمَ فَقَبَضَ عَلَى كُرْسُوعِي ثُمَّ قَالَ خُذْ الْبَسْ مَا كَسَاكَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ قَالَ وَكَانَ الْبَرَاءُ يَقُولُ كَيْفَ تَأْمُرُونِي أَنْ أَضَعَ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْبَسْ مَا كَسَاكَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

English Translation

Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us: Abū Rajāʾ narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Mālik narrated to us, who said: I saw al-Barāʾ wearing a gold ring, and people would say to him: "Why do you wear gold when the Prophet ﷺ forbade it?" Al-Barāʾ said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, before him was spoils he was distributing — captives and household goods. He distributed it all until only this ring remained. He raised his gaze and looked at his Companions, then lowered it. He raised his gaze and looked at them, then lowered it. He raised his gaze and looked at them, then said: "O Barāʾ!" I went to him and sat before him. He took the ring, grasped my wrist, and said: "Take it. Wear what Allah and His Messenger have given you." Al-Barāʾ would say: "How can you order me to take off what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Wear what Allah and His Messenger have given you?"
