ʿAffān narrated to us: Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated to us: Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl narrated to us: Yūnus narrated to us, from al-Barāʾ, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when we came upon a well with little water. Six — or seven — of us went down into it, myself being the seventh — or eighth — to draw water. A bucket was lowered to us while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on the edge of the well. I put in half of it — or nearly a third. The bucket was raised to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Al-Barāʾ said: I almost used my own vessel hoping to find something to put in my mouth, but found nothing. He dipped his hand in it and said what Allah willed him to say. The bucket was returned to us with what was in it. The last of us was pulled out wrapped in a garment for fear of drowning. Then it overflowed. ʿAffān once said: out of dread of drowning.
