حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَرْزُوقٍ عَن شَقِيقِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَن الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ نَزَلَتْ حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ فَقَرَأْنَاهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ نَقْ
رَأَهَا لَمْ يَنْسَخْهَا اللَّهُ فَأَنْزَلَ { حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى } فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ كَانَ مَعَ شَقِيقٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَزْهَرُ وَهِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ قَالَ قَدْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ كَيْفَ نَزَلَتْ وَكَيْفَ نَسَخَهَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ

English Translation
Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated from Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq, from Shaqīq ibn ʿUqbah, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said: 'The verse was revealed: "Guard strictly the prayers and the ʿAṣr prayer" [2:238, original reading]. We recited it during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for as long as Allah willed that we recite it. Then Allah abrogated it and revealed: "Guard strictly the prayers and the middle prayer" [2:238]. A man who was with Shaqīq named Azhar said: "And that is the ʿAṣr prayer." He [al-Barāʾ] said: "I have told you how it was revealed and how Allah abrogated it. And Allah knows best."'
