Aswad ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb, that his father informed him that Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr informed him, saying: I said: 'I shall observe how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prays.' He stood and raised his hands until they were level with his ears. Then he grasped his left hand with his right. Then, when he intended to bow, he raised his hands until they were level with his ears and placed his hands on his knees. Then he raised [his head] and raised his hands likewise. Then he prostrated and placed his hands level with his ears. Then he sat and spread his left foot, placed his left palm on his left knee — his thigh, in ʿĀṣim's description — then placed the tip of his right elbow on his right thigh, clenched three [fingers], made a ring, and I saw him gesturing like this — Zuhayr pointed with his index finger, clenched two fingers, and made a ring of the thumb over the second [middle] finger. Zuhayr said: ʿĀṣim said: 'ʿAbd al-Jabbār narrated to me from some of his family that Wāʾil said: I came another time when the people were wearing garments including hooded cloaks and mantles, and I saw them gesturing like this beneath the garments.'
